03-01 - Memory Distortion (Introduction)
Illusions of Memory: Confabulation, Suggestibility and Misattribution
Memory Distortion
Our memories are not as reliable as we think. We often believe that we remember events accurately, but in reality, our memories are subject to distortion. This distortion can arise from various factors, including:
- Confabulation: The unconscious invention of memories or details to fill in gaps.
- Suggestibility: The tendency for memories to be altered by suggestions from others.
- Misattribution: Assigning a memory to the wrong source or context.
